Flying Insects

Flying Insect Pest Control

Common sense and food hygiene and safety legislations dictate that flying insects should be excluded from food preparation and processing areas.

The risk to human health of contamination from flying insects and their behaviour is not to be underestimated. The Common House Fly alone is thought to be responsible for transmitting up to 65 diseases to humans including typhoid, dysentery, cholera, tetanus, tuberculosis and conjunctivitis.

The feeding and behaviour patterns of flying insects are startling. A female fly can produce 700 offspring in 1 week. One fly can carry over 3,000,000 bacteria and the eggs of parasitic worms. Their habits include foraging in faecal matter and rotting food, vomiting, laying eggs and dropping faeces on human food.

Flies feed on moist decaying matter and ingest only liquid food. To facilitate this feeding flies vomit saliva on their food, treading it in with their feet to break it down. This enables the fly to sponge the “liquid food” back up for ingestion. For good measure the fly excretes when it come to rest.

Flying Insects Control Solutions

There are three principal steps to good Flying Insect Control

1. Good House Keeping

Flies can’t breed in large numbers if their food sources are limited. Key to this is good house keeping, keeping areas clean and tidy, not allowing waste to accumulate, providing covered waste containers (keeping lids shut), ensure that drains are properly covered, clean up spills without delay, produce and maintain a high standard of hygiene with a robust cleaning rota and keep windows and doors closed wherever and whenever possible. Our technical staff have the knowledge and expertise to provide help and advice on good house keeping in food preparation areas.
