Project Description

The Project: New B&B retreat to rural Monmouthshire as Barn Conversion popularity continues to grow. Following extensive structural repair works, the earth retaining elements of this barn conversion required specialist waterproofing to protect the finishes from water ingress from the ground.
These 2 unused barns were to be converted to offer Bed & Breakfast accommodation set within picturesque farmland in rural Monmouthshire.

Due to the sloping topography of the site, the existing barn has earth retaining elevations each time the floor level drops within the structure resulting in water ingress and dampness throughout.

Having previous involvement undertaking structural repair works on the project, Protectahome were asked to design & install a waterproofing solution that would provide the necessary Grade 3 environment (as per BS8102:2009) for the new Bed & Breakfast accommodation.

Working alongside the project manager Protectahome’s specialist waterproofing team designed a Type C (Drained) Protection waterproofing system that would provide the necessary finished environment.

The Type C system would incorporate the use of cavity drain membranes installed to the earth retaining and adjoining elevations coupled with the installation of a perimeter drainage channel at the wall/floor junction to safely collect & deliver captured free water to a safe point of disposal.

Due to the sloping topography of the site, a passive drainage system was able to be installed as the captured free water could be diverted into mains drainage and safely away from the structure without the need for a pumping system.

Service/maintenance ports were also installed into the perimeter drainage system to ensure that the channels could be effectively monitored and maintained throughout the life of the system.

The works were completed on time and within budget and a Protectahome long term guarantee was issued upon completion. The client was extremely grateful for Protectahome’s input and expertise throughout the project.
