Bristol Youth Centre closed due to Bird Infestation

Nailsea Youth Centre in Nailsea is undergoing major refurbishment costing North Somerset Council approximately £70,000; however the bill has been inflated as a result of a bird infestation in the roof. As a result, the inside of the Youth Centre needed to be completely redecorated and repaired.

North Somerset Council spokesman Nick Yates said: “The infestation caused damage to the guttering allowing rain water to leak in and resulting in the need to carry out internal repairs and redecoration in several areas.”

Pigeon droppings and debris is not only an aesthetic issue for a property but it can cause damage to the structure of a building. It was necessary for a Pigeon Controller to remedy the problems.

Pigeons and their faeces can potentially cause a health hazard to humans; they are carriers of a number of diseases such as psittacosis and salmonella. Their droppings can also cause diseases such as listeriosis, cryptococcis and aspergillosis. Pigeons are also hosts to fleas and other parasites such as Pigeon ticks and bird mites which can of course be transmitted to humans.

To avoid any of the above threats and to allow the refurbishment to take place, it was necessary for the Youth House to close its doors in June; it is expected to reopen in September.
