The Abersannan road over river bridge has stood over for over 110 years. The arch bridge is of traditional stone construction and set in a beautiful countryside popular with cyclist and tourists. Significant cracks had developed in the bridge causing great concern. The cracks were attributed to spandrels separating from the soffit of the bridge. The bridge forms an essential road link for the local community and tourists, therefore any remedial solution would need to accommodate the bridge remaining open.
Protectahome carried out a detailed inspection of the bridge and reviewed engineer’s reports provided by the local authority. This enabled us to provided a quotation for a scheme of remedial repairs based on the Cintec Anchor System. We proposed a full package service including for the provision of all welfare facilities, traffic management, scaffolding, anchoring and repointing. Risk assessments and our method statement were prepared mindful of the location and the risks associated with working directly over flowing water and near moving traffic. Our scaffold design provided for a fully suspended deck above the river. From this platform our technician’s core drilled holes through the spandrels and installed Cintec RWT anchors 1200mm long. Once the anchors had cured, the cores were rebedded for an almost invisible repair. The main cracks were improved using a lime based mortar and grout. Work was completed on time, within budget and with the minimum of disruption to the surrounding community and businesses. The bridge remained open throughout.
